In my last week’s post Make Money Online with Google Adsense, I explained what Google Adsense was all about, listed the reasons why you should sign up for Google Adsense and how to put ads to your website.

Today, I would like to talk about Google Adsense section targeting.

Although section targeting is a very useful feature, not many people make use of it because they do not even know there is such a feature or do not know what section targeting is.

If you want to make money online with Google AdSense, you should know what it is and how to apply it in your website.

What Is Section Targeting?

Have you ever had problems showing relevant Adsense ads on your website? If you have, it is very likely that your website’s content is not targeted to the main keywords. Google Adsense tries its best to find out what the context is around the ads and serves the most relevant ads. By providing it with your suggestions, you can help it improve your ad targeting. The main idea is to suggest key sections of your web page that you would like it to emphasize or de-emphasize when finding ads to match your web page’s content.

How should section targeting be used?

You simply need to add a pair of special HTML comment tags to your HTML code. They specify the start and end of a section you would like to emphasize or de-emphasize for ad targeting. The usage of HTML comment tags to emphasize a section is as follows:

It is the section that I would like Google Adsense to use for finding ads for my web page. All main keywords are in this section.

Besides designating sections you would like to emphasize, you can do the same thing to specify sections you would like Google Adsense to ignore by adding a “(weight=ignore)” to the starting tag. For example,

It is the section that I would like Google Adsense to ignore when it finds ads for my web page.

Actually, I find it easier to use the tag

<!-- google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore)  -->

to specify which section not to target because all content of a web page is on topic most of the time and I just need to surround only text with the start and end of this tag to be ignored.

Go through your web pages and check if there are any ads that are irrelevant. These mis-targeted ads could only be caused by just a small section of text. By following the above approach to let Google Adsense ignore this section, your ads should be back on target.

You can have as many sections of a web page as you like. However, according to the Adsense documentation, they cannot guarantee the results and it may take up to 2 weeks before their crawlers take into account any changes you have made to your website.
